The Mercedes-Benz 'W114' was introduced to a waiting public in 1968, its modern three-box styling a welcome replacement over the W110 models it replaced.
Among a raft of innovative changes which included the first fully electronic fuel injection system, the W114 were the first post-war Mercedes-Benz production cars to use a new suspension design. The semi-trailing rear arm and ball-joint front end format first displayed in the W114 would be used in all new Mercedes passenger car models until the development of the multi-link rear suspensions of the 1980s.
Topping the range was the 280CE Coupe. With respect to chassis, power unit and framework, the coupés closely resembled the 250 Type saloon, and up to the A-pillar, even the body of the two versions was identical.
Starting from the A-pillar, however, the differences became rather more pronounced: The coupé had a flatter front screen and a roof that was 45 mm lower compared to that of the saloon; last but not least it was a two-door model, of course. The front and rear side windows came without a frame and were fully retractable. Due to the missing B-pillar, an uninterrupted fresh air zone was created in true hardtop manner. Another distinguishing feature was the longer rear bumper which extended right up to the wheel arches and harmonised well with the long rear of the car.
The elegant sportscar characteristics were backed up by a completely new 6-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts; producing 182bhp it gave the CE a top speed in excess of 120mph.
This stunning example has been in the same family since the 1980's, and has recently been through a light recommissioning after spending the last 25 years in storage.
Originally purchased to chauffeur its owner around the local seafront, the car was subsequently purchased by my client as a present for his father in 1986.
Having then lived its life in the same immediate family until the passing of my clients father in 2000, it was put into long term storage for the next 25 years.
In June of 2025 the car was removed from storage and subject to a light recommissioning - please see below for a full listing.
A true 'survivor' car, this CE 280 Coupe presents in lovely condition. Having been stored for a large majority of its life the paintwork is largely original and stands in great condition for its age. Both the interior and exterior present with charming patina.
Accompanying is the original bookpack, booklets and service book, and a comprehensive service history with various invoices dating back to 1973.
History:
At this point vehicle usage becomes sporadic, and was then put into long term storage in 2000. We are aware it was put through an MOT in 2011 however it was then returned to storage.
On the 17th of June 2025 the vehicle was subject to light recommissioning work including:
This work totalled over £2,200 and although the vehicle is tax and MOT exempt due to its age my vendor has had a new MOT carried out for peace of mind for its new owner. It of course passed with no advisories.
