The Homologation Special
For those unfamiliar with the term, homologation requires manufacturers wishing to compete in certain forms of motorsport to produce a limited number of road-going versions of their competition vehicles. A modern example is the GR Yaris, which—while technically a homologation car—has also become a mainstream model.
In the past, however, manufacturers approached homologation with a very different mindset. Mitsubishi proved this in the 1980s and early 1990s by showcasing the then-new Pajero in the legendary Dakar Rally, securing multiple victories along the way.
When regulation changes were introduced for the 1997 Dakar Rally, Mitsubishi returned to the drawing board and developed a top-spec Evolution version of the second-generation Pajero. The result was something truly special.
Limited to just 2,693 units and sold exclusively in its home market of Japan the road-going Pajero Evolution was a purpose-built homologation model, engineered from the ground up specifically to meet the demands of the Dakar Rally’s production-based T2 class.
Powered by Mitsubishi’s 6G74 3.5-litre V6 engine, the Pajero Evolution produces 276 bhp—an impressive figure even by today’s standards, and remarkable for a vehicle developed nearly three decades ago.
Wide arches house rally-spec wheels and off-road tyres, while a sophisticated suspension setup features double wishbones at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. Subtle yet purposeful scoops and spoilers further underline that this is no ordinary Pajero.
Underneath, substantial sump guards provide essential protection, while the interior is equipped with Recaro seats. This particular example is further enhanced by a Ralliart steering wheel, offering increased legroom and delivering a superb driving feel.
The drivetrain is equally impressive, comprising a switchable four wheel drive system, and was subject to a full gearbox service some 200 miles ago.

This example is being offered on behalf of a long-standing client who, due to relocation, has decided to reduce the size of his collection. During his ownership, the Pajero Evolution has been a true pride and joy, benefiting from meticulous care and attentive maintenance throughout.
Recently, the vehicle has undergone a gearbox service, along with a comprehensive interior strip-down and professional clean, ensuring it presents and performs exactly as it should. It drives exceptionally well and feels tight and composed on the road.
With just over 103,000 miles, the Evo wears its mileage extremely well, standing as a testament to both its robust engineering and the high standard of care it has received.
