The Lotus Exige needs no introduction.
Lotus founder Colin Chapman's mantra of "Simplify, then add lightness" runs deep in the Exige's DNA, tipping the scales at a featherweight 930kg. While the original Elise and Exige used a Rover K-series engine (highly modified in the Exige) the Series 2 Exige moved to the more powerful and much more reliable 2ZZ-GE Toyota engine, designed by Yamaha.
While the base Exige utilised the standard engine producing around 190bhp, this model - the Exige S - added a supercharger into the mix. Power rose to 218bhp however in 2008 Lotus took it a step further, offering a tick box called 'Performance Pack' on the options list.
For your extra £3,000 power jumps to 240bhp and torque to a useable 170lb ft. Brakes are upgraded with four-piston AP racing callipers mounted on larger 308mm discs, and the clever variable-slip traction control from the Lotus 2-Eleven. A smart system, allowing you to dial up the tolerance of slip from 1 through to 9 per cent; one last click and it turns off completely, and a launch control system means getting off the line isn't troublesome.
Alongside the Performance Pack this example also benefits from the £2,000 Touring Pack, giving more leather, more soundproofing, full carpets and a cup holder. A further £1,000 was spent optioning air conditioning - a must for warmer days.
A full-length roof scoop funnels air directly to the intercooler completes the factory upgrades.
